Abstract

A new tetrafunctional monomer, [(oxybis(methylene)] bis(2-ethylpropane-2,1,3-triyl)tetrakis(oxy)tetrakis(3-oxopropane-3,1-diyl) tetraacrylate (DTMP-CEA), was synthesized through a condensation reaction between di(trimethylolpropane), containing hydroxyl groups, and 2-carboxyethylacrylate. The chemical structure of the synthesized monomer was confirmed by NMR and FT-IR analyses. DTMP-CEA was compared with the commercialized EB-40 monomer by evaluating properties such as molecular weight distribution, viscosity, adhesion, and performance in UV ink applications. GPC analysis showed that EB-40 consists of a mixture of molecules with various molecular weights, while DTMP-CEA is a single molecule. Bond shear strength measurements revealed values of 725.3 N for DTMP-CEA and 158.3 N for EB-40, indicating that the newly developed monomer has approximately 4.6 times improved bond shear strength. Furthermore, when applied to cyan UV ink, DTMP-CEA exhibited a cure speed that was over 10% faster than EB-40.
