Research Papers : Direct Conversion of Methane to Methanol in Supercritical Water
Abstract
The direct conversion of methane to methanol in supercritical water has been investigated over the temperature range of 400 to 450 ℃ at 250 bar. Methane was oxidized to CO, CO_2 and CH_3OH. The conversions of oxygen and methane increased as the temperature and the mean residence tiem increased. The selectivity to methanol decreased as reaction temperature increased. The highest selectivity to methanol obtained was approximately 37% at 410 ℃. It was found that in the absence of oxygen, methane was stable in the supercritical water under the experimental conditions investigated in this study.
