Research Papers : Cure Behavior, Mechanical Properties and Ozone Resistance of EPDM Rubber and CR Rubber Blend

Abstract

By mechanical mixing method the ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) was blended with the chloroprene rubber (CR). Its cure behavior, mechanical properties and ozone resistance test of blends were subsequently investigated. The cure behaviors of the EPDM/CR blends indicated that rheographs showed a gradual increase in the torque value with an increase in the CR loading. That is, in the blends the incorporation of CR resulted in a significant increase in the degree of crosslinking. It was noted that the hardness increased with an increasing of CR contents. Generally the hardness was increased with heat aging time most likely due to the post cure. In ozone resistance teat of blend, after 8 h a portion of fine crack was obtained for pure CR. It is confirmed that ozone resistance was greatly improved by addition of 25 wt% EPDM to CR.

초록

기계적 혼련법을 이용하여 ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM)과 chloroprene rubber (CR)를 혼합하여 블렌드 혼련물을 제조한 후 이들의 가황거동, 기계적 성질 및 내오존성 등을 측정하였다. EPDM/CR 블렌드물의 가황 거동을 측정한 결과 CR고무 함량이 늘어남에 따라 가교밀도의 증가에 기인하여 torque 값이 점진적으로 증가하였다. 그리고 CR고무의 첨가량이 늘어남에 따라 경도가 증가하였으며 공기 중의 노화시험에 있어서 노화처리 시간이 길어짐에 따라 시료의 경도가 증가함을 알 수 있었다. 내오존성 시험에 있어서 CR단독의 경우는 8 h 이후에 미세한 crack이 생겼으나 EPDM을 25 wt%만 첨가하여도 내오존성이 크게 개선되었다.
