Research Papers : Synthesis of Zeolite from Kaolin and it`s Application to Ammonia Removal

Abstract

The removal of NH4+-N was studied by the zeolite that was synthesized with kaolin as a raw material. Na-A zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal method in 4 M NaOH for 4 hr at 100 ℃. The structural transformation from kaolin to Na-A and hydroxy sodalite, respectively, was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The synthesized zeolite showed superior removal efficiency of NH4+-N at pH range of 7 ~ 9. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N using synthesized zeolite was affected with NaOH concentration, synthesis temperature and time. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N of 92 % was observed from the zeolite that was synthesized with NaOH 4 M for 4 hr at 100 ℃. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N by the zeolite was higher than that of commercial adsorbents such as 3A, 4A, 5A and activated carbon.

초록

고령토를 이용한 제올라이트의 합성과 암모니아성 질소 제거에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 100 ℃에서 4 h동안 4 M-NaOH로 수열합성법에 의하여 Na-A 제올라이트를 합성하였다. 고령토를 이용하여 제조한 Na-A 형태의 제올라이트인 하이드록시 소다라이트 결정전이를 X-ray diffraction 등으로 관찰하였으며, 합성한 제올라이트는 pH 7 ~ 9의 범위에서 우수한 암모니아성 질소의 제거능을 나타내었다. 합성한 제올라이트의 성능은 NaOH 농도,합성온도, 시간에 영향을 받았으며, 이는 92 %의 암모니아성 질소 제거능을 나타내었다
