Invited Review Article : Effect of Polypyrrole Addition into Carbon Electrodes for EDLC with PVdF-HFP
Abstract
Electrodes were fabricated with activated carbons such as YP-17 and BP-20, conducting polymer of polypyrrole (Ppy) prepared by chemical polymerization in our laboratory and mono hinder of poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) in n-methyl-2-pyrolidinone (NMP). Electrochemical characteristics of unit cells such as charge-discharge, equivalent series resistance (ESR), specific capacitance, specific power, cyclic voltammetry(CV) and impedance were measured. It was noted that Ppy should be added within 8 wt.%, in order to fabricate electrode which had excellent electrochemical characteristics with the fixed 5 wt.% of mono binder. Especially, it was ascertained that the BP-20 electrode fabricated from 7 wt.% of Ppy exhibited good electrochemical characteristics with electric conductivity of 19.0 S/cm, specific capacitance of 30.88 F/g, ESR of 1.95 Ω at 1 kHz specific energy of 7.25 Wh/kg and specific power of 624 W/kg, and was compatible with EDLC(electric double layer capacitor) of large capacitance.

단일 결합제 poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP)를 분산매 n-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP)에 용해시킨 후 화학 중합법에 의하여 합성된 폴리피롤(polypyrrole, Ppy)과 활성탄을 배합하여 슬러리 상태의 활성물질로 전극을 제조하였다. 단위셀의 충ㆍ방전 특성, 등가직렬저항(equivalent series resistance, ESR), 비정전용량(specific capacitance), 에너지밀도, cyclic voltammetry (CV) 및 임피던스(impedance) 특성 등의 전기화학적 특성을 측정하였다. 결합제를 5 wt%로 고정하였을 때 우수한 전기화학적 특성을 갖는 전극을 제조하기 위하여 Ppy의 무게함량이 8 wt% 이내로 첨가하는 것이 적당하였다. 특히 BP-20의 전극에 첨가된 Ppy의 무게함량이 7 wt%일 때 전극의 전기전도도 19.0 S/㎝, 비정전용량 30.88 F/g, ESR (1 ㎑) 1.95 Ω, 에너지밀도 7.25 Wh/㎏ 및 동력밀도 624 W/㎏ 등으로 전기화학특성이 좋았고, 대용량 EDLC (electric double layer capacitor) 전극으로 사용할 수 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
