Invited Review Article : Hydrophilie Modification of Low Density Polyethylene Film by Direct Fluorination
Abstract
Improvements of the hydrophilic property and introduction of chemically reactive groups on the surface of low density polyethylene (LDPE) film were made possible by a direct fluorination process, using only fluorine and fluorine-oxygen mixed gas. This study attempted to obtain the optimum fluorination condition, which included fluorination pressure, time and F2 to O2 partial pressure ratio, for improving the hydrophilic property of LDPE film. The summary of majer results were as follows: (1) In the fluorination of LDPE film using only F2, the hydrophilic property was improved by improving the polar surface tension from partial formation of -CF group under low fluorination pressure and short fluorination time; (2) In the oxyfluorination (F2-O2 mixed gas), the hydrophilic property was improved by introducing -COOH (hydroperoide) group at the surface of LDPE film. This property improved most significantly when the partial pressure ratio of F2 to O2 was 1/9 ; and (3) Metacrylic acid monomer was effectively grafted with -COOH group of the oxyfluorinated LDPE film at 80 ℃. The water contact angle of the oxyfluorinated LDPE film grafted with methacrylic acid was 25°.

플로린가스 단독 혹은 플로린-산소 혼합가스를 사용한 직접 플루오르화에 의해 저밀도 폴리에틸렌 필름의 표면을 친수성으로 개질하는데 있어서 최적의 조건을 찾고자 하였다. 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) LDPE 필름의 fluorination 결과, fluorination 압력이 낮고 시간이 짧은 경우에 부분적인 -CF 결합의 생성으로 필름 표면에 극성 표면장력 성분의 증가로 친수성이 향상하였다. (2) LDPE 필름의 oxyfluorination 결과, F2에 대한 O2의 부분압력비가 증가함에 따라 필름의 표면에 -COOH(hydroperoxide)기의 함량이 높아져 친수성이 향상하였다. (3) 80℃에서 oxyfluorination 처리한 LDPE 필름의 -COOH기와 methacrylic acid 모노머의 그라프트 중합이 이루어졌고, 이에 따라 몰에 대한 접촉각은 25℃까지 저하하였다.
