Preparation of Waterborne Coatings Containing Water Swellable Clay and Its Characteristics of the Printed - paper Coating

Abstract

Four different composition of waterborne coatings (WBC) were prepared by compounding of bentonite and synthetic hectorite (SHEC), a water swellable clay, with arcylic latex and coating additives. The rheological properties of WBC and the properties of the films casted by WBC were measured. The physical properties of the film surface of WBC on a printed paper were also investigated. WBC-3 and WBC-4 containing SHEC showed the phase transition of sol and gel with the shear rate, the thixotropic property, and accordingly, the dispersion and storage stability increased. The initial decomposition temperature and the transmittance of WBC films, which contained the water swellable clay, increased in range of 32.2∼54.7 ℃, and this was 5.9∼7.4% more than the commercial MC-21W. The domain size of water swellable clay in the WBC films decreased in the order of WBC-4>WBC-3>WBC-2. The water-resistance and the adhesion force of the film on the coated paper increased in the following order: MC-21W

초록

수팽윤성 점토로 벤토나이트와 합성헥토라이트(SHEC), 아크릴계 라텍스 및 각종 코팅첨가제를 배합하여 수성코팅제 (WBC) 4종을 제조하였다. 제조한 WBC의 유동학적 성질 및 WBC로 주조된 필름의 성질을 측정하였고, 또한 인쇄지용 WBC로서 코팅된 인쇄지 도막의 물성을 조사하였다. SHEC를 함유한 WBC-3 및 WBC-4는 전단력에 따라 졸과 겔의 상전이 현상, 즉 요변성(thixotropy)을 나타냄으로서 분산안정성 및 저장안정성이 우수하였다. 수팽윤성 점토가 함유된 WBC 필름의 초기분해온도와 투명성은 시판 MC-21W의 필름보다 각각 32.2∼54.7℃와 5.9∼7.4%의 범위로 증가한 결과를 나타내었다. 제조한 WBC로부터 코팅된 인쇄지 도막의 표면상태를 관찰한 결과, 수팽윤성 점토의 domain 크기는 다음의 순서 즉 WBC-4>WBC-3>WBC-2로 감소하였다.
